Persian Carpet-Kelim 147 x 204
This product is currently sold out.
This rare and unique tribal carpet - kelim has been carefully selected from thousands of carpets displayed at the annual Iranian Hand Woven Carpet Exhibition. Balouch Soumak carpets are not readily available and make up a tiny portion of a huge carpet industry in Iran (Persia) where the emphasis is on high quality carpets for the local and Middle Eastern market. As shown in the picture this carpet crafted by hand in the Eastern tribal areas of Iran a typical high end carpet that can take over two year to make. Sadly with the increase of urbanization in Iran the art of carpet making is becoming a dying trade.
This carpet is hand knotted with a combination of cut pile and flat weave which gives a three dimensional quality. Made with hand-spun wool and natural dyes it is exceptionally sturdy. At present thee are a number of machine made copies which originate in Turkey and Pakistan. It is very easy to see the difference by looking at the weight of the carpet, the closeness of the weft and even the smell, as in many cases the material being used is synthetic.
This is an exceptional piece that will be passed on from generation to generation,
